What this result means

A practical interpretation before the formula details.

MODEL Transparent estimate

The calculator uses entry price, leverage, maintenance margin and the margin you make available to the position.

EXCHANGE REALITY Exact formulas vary

Exchanges can use mark price, tiered maintenance rates, fees, funding and account-level rules. Treat this as an estimate, not an exchange quote.

How it is calculated

The simplified linear-perpetual model used by this tool.

LongPliq = (E × (1 − 1/L) − Mextra/Q) ÷ (1 − MMR − F)
ShortPliq = (E × (1 + 1/L) + Mextra/Q) ÷ (1 + MMR + F)

E = entry price, L = leverage, Mextra = additional available margin, Q = position units, MMR = maintenance margin rate.

Method, example and limitations

Reference example: entry $100, 10× leverage, 0.50% maintenance and 0.05% estimated closing fee gives approximately $90.50 for a Long and $109.40 for a Short before additional margin.

Scope: linear USD-margined contracts with one constant maintenance rate. The optional mark price measures the remaining buffer and warns when the modeled boundary is already crossed.

Cross margin is only a scenario because other positions, unrealized PnL, funding, tiers and exchange-specific deductions can change available equity. Reviewed August 21, 2026.

Important: This is a generic estimator. Actual liquidation prices depend on each exchange, contract, maintenance tier, mark price, fees, funding and other open positions. Informational tool only — not financial advice.

How to estimate a crypto liquidation price

Use the calculator to model where a leveraged futures position may reach its liquidation boundary. Select Long or Short, enter the entry price and leverage, then set maintenance margin and any additional margin supporting the position. The result shows an estimated liquidation price and its distance from entry.

Exchange liquidation engines can include tiered maintenance margin, mark price, funding, closing fees and cross-margin account equity. For that reason, this is a planning estimate rather than an exact exchange quote.

Frequently asked questions

What is a liquidation price?

It is the price region where an exchange can force-close a leveraged position because remaining margin no longer satisfies maintenance requirements.

Why can my exchange show a different liquidation price?

Exchanges use contract-specific maintenance tiers, mark prices, fees, funding and account-level margin rules that a generic calculator cannot fully reproduce.

Does higher leverage move liquidation closer?

Usually yes. Higher leverage means less initial margin supports the same notional exposure, so a smaller adverse move can consume the available buffer.
